@Gary_EL: I don't think the decision to not have wireless charging had anything to do with the width of the phone increasing. I have seen the Lumia phones with wireless charging capabilities and they were pretty slim. There amy be other reasons behind this decision. Perhaps not to add additional cost.

I think the screen size is one of the deciding factors, the other is it being confortable to hold in your hands.

Perhaps Apple's emphasis on slim and sleek weighed on their decision. They were willing to sacrifice form over function. I don't understand the company's emphasis on slim design - my problem with smartphones is that they take up too much length and width in my front pocket no matter how slim. But, of course, I'm not an Apple customer.

Smartphone and Tablet sales

Just wanted to add my 2 cents around smarphone and tablet sales.

I think that the main reason why sales figures are dropping for the likes of Apple is not because of actual drop in sales but more that:

- One, people don't always buy the latest tablet, but mainly upgrade once every two or three years (or more). I myself have a 2013 Nexus 7, and have no plans on upgrading since it still very well provides what I need.

- Two, the market is crowded, and there are more and more competitors, to the pie is shrinking.

What does the community think?

My thoughts exactly. To add to your comment, I think Apple didn't provide the wireless charging in favor of assuring a robust design. They may have considered it in the past but probably couldn't have yet come up with a design that works.

It'll be interesting to see if Apple simply adopts a current provider of components to adopt wirless charging, or do there own way and do there own thing (which is likely what'll happen).

Guess we just need to wait and see

Why so Late

It's strange that Apple waited so long in adding this obviously useful feature. The question is if they will use one of the active standards, or as is often the case with Apple, will they invent their own?
