CTO vs CIO vs CDO
I can not agree more with Mike Guggemos' staement:
"When I look at what most CDOs do, at least those with whom I've interacted, they're actually doing the board-level responsibility of a CIO, which tells me that people are being hired to fill skill gaps that the CIO lacks," said Mike Guggemos, CIO of global technology solution provider Insight Enterprises. "Last time I checked, IT stands for Information Technology, and the CDO is all about how that information is processed and used."
I have been talking to different SIGs about this for quite a while now.
I think that CIOs need to go back to the basics and regain control over business information as their primary responsibility while CTOs should be responsible for technollogy component. This would also help to promote Business Information as a first class corporate asset.

Re: CAO
Whine going through this article, it seems that it is more relevant and practical to have the CAO designation than the CDO  for data driven companies.

CAO
I think it's a good idea to have a CAO designation for data driven organizations. This creates the proper organizational hierarchy which will motivate the team towards their career success.

Re: CDO
As the article rightly said, any C level's should be good leaders. This will help them to get more out of their employees at the same time it will help in increasing the efficiency of the organization.

Re: More rise than fall
@charlie I agree with you. Do you think it's necessary to have C level's in an organization? Will it be more productive?

CDO
Great article.  Agree that leadership and business acumen mandatory in this role.  The future of data in a knowledge-centric era is key. Wondering if a future-article or an example is available on the key elements of a successful Data Strategy? Lots of talk about it, but haven't seen a winning example to date.

I agree.  Corporate politics can get in the way, though, like anything else.  :-)

Re: More rise than fall
I like this line: "In short, don't hire a CDO for bragging rights." Any company that would hire any C-suite leader for bragging rights should be allowed to do so, so that they can suffer the consequences. Corporate Darwinism.

More rise than fall
I think CDOs that understand how to work collaboratively are going to see more rise than fall.
