HP Launches Latest Eco-Friendly Consumer PCs

The computers include energy-efficient AMD processors, ship in 100% recyclable packaging, and use 45% less energy compared with other HP desktops.

Hewlett-Packard on Monday launched a couple of consumer desktops with features that reduce the negative impact PCs have on the environment.

The HP Pavilion Verde Special Edition a6645f and the Pavilion Phoenix Special Edition a6655f include energy-efficient processors from Advanced Micro Devices and 100% recyclable packaging with less plastic foam. The systems' power management features provide up to 45% energy savings compared with HP desktops without the features enabled.

Both desktops include up to 5 GB of memory, Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit edition, and a front-panel memory card reader for transferring photos and files to and from peripheral devices. The Pavilion Phoenix a6655f is powered by an AMD Phenom X4 9150e quad-core processor and features a 640-GB hard drive. The Verde a6645f includes an AMD Athlon X2 4850e dual-core processor and 500-GB drive.

Both systems are scheduled to be available Nov. 9. The Phoenix a6655f will be available exclusively through Best Buy, and the Verde a6645f only at Circuit City. Prices start at $659 and $579, respectively.

Along with the new desktops, HP also introduced the 25.5-inch w2558hc Vivid Color display, which comes with a built-in Webcam and a memory card reader for watching slideshows and videos from devices when the PC is turned off. The widescreen flat panel has multiple USB ports and digital outputs for connecting to MP3 players, digital cameras, and other consumer electronics. The display is currently available directly from HP or select retailers for $599.

In addition to the new products, HP also introduced new configurations of the Compaq Presario, Pavilion, Pavilion Slimline, and Pavilion Elite lines. The configurations span the needs of consumers from entertainment enthusiasts to budget-minded families and students, HP said.
