Berkeley Data Systems has launched an online backup service that offers unlimited storage capacity for $4.95 per month to compete with rival Carbonite.

The company's Mozy Unlimited also provides unlimited restores; users can restore files and folders from Windows Explorer by right-clicking, Berkeley said. Consumers can pay monthly or annually; the latter is priced at $54.45.

Like rival Carbonite -- which sells unlimited storage for $49.95 per year -- Mozy lets users select files and folders to backup. Alternately, users can choose the type of files, such as music tracks or digital photos, for backup. Other features of the service include data-on-DVD ordering, custom scheduling, and automatic Microsoft Outlook backup.

A free version of Mozy limits storage capacity to 2 Gbytes or less.

Mozy supports only Windows XP, although a Vista version is scheduled to debut in February. A Mac edition also is in the works.

The Mozy Unlimited and Mozy Free services, and the required software, can be found on the Berkeley Data Systems site.
