Opsware Inc. next month will introduce a new component to its data-center infrastructure software that's designed to help companies gain better visibility into their IT investments. The company's Data Center Intelligence software will track and analyze the status of IT infrastructure and personnel and ship as a module within the upcoming Opsware System 4.0.

"Opsware System software already has the data, but until now that data hasn't been collected in one place," chief technology officer Tim Howes said. The new Data Center Intelligence repository is designed to help IT managers understand and compare their most time-consuming IT jobs, track server and software license use, and compile data about changes made to different systems.

Opsware is fast becoming an important component of Hewlett-Packard's Adaptive Enterprise strategy. HP is training employees on Opsware's data-center automation software, and by year's end, companies will be able to buy HP Utility Data Center bundled with Opsware management software. "You'll not only be able to virtualize IT assets but automate the management of the entire software stack," Howes says.
