Most Americans say they are willing to use a meter or other smart device to save money and create a better world.A recent survey sponsored by GE found that Americans are massively in favor of saving energy, and are ready to use meters or smart devices to achieve that goal.

The survey found that 88 percent were willing to use a meter or smart device if it would help better manage their energy usage. Meanwhile, 82 percent agreed that such devices are the wave of the future.

They're undoubtedly correct. Actually, such devices are already available at retail for as little as $20, and that wonder is that they are not considered standard equipment by any business with a major IT investment. They could tell you how much current your hardware really draws-especially in standby mode. In some cases, you may decide that the off-on switch should not be ignored.

Of the 88 percent who supported using such devices, 95 percent liked the idea because it would save money, but eco-awareness was also strong, with 88 percent wanting to leave a better world for their children or grandchildren. Of those opposed to the idea, many simply seemed confused about the issues.

SMB owners also have electricity bills, they also have children and grandchildren, and they are probably not confused by the issues. So they probably share the same feelings as the survey respondents-and would profit by going to Amazon.com and running a search with the phrase "electricity usage monitor." The results will provide a taste of what's out there.

The survey was carried out this money by SurveyOne, through a telephone poll of 1,000 Americans.
