The Sunnyvale, Calif., company said the upgrade that it has launched in limited beta is the most dramatic change to the service since it was launched in 2000. The new features are expected to introduce desktop-like functionality to the user interface, such as the ability to drag and drop pictures for easier and faster organizing.
The new Yahoo Photos would also include the ability to comment, rate and tag the photos of others and share that information, making it easier to search for pictures. In addition, the service would have tighter integration with Yahoo Web mail, instant messaging and its service for posting and sharing photos over mobile devices.
The redesigned service is currently being tested to limited group of Yahoo Photos users in the United States. The beta version will be available outside the U.S. in the coming month. The date for general availability was not released.
Yahoo Photos is the second largest photo site with 7.77 million unique visitors in April, according to Nielsen/NetRatings. Flickr, which is owned by Yahoo, is the fifth largest with 4.82 million visitors. Together, the two properties surpass No. 1 photo site Photobucket, which had 7.84 million visitors in April.
