Capping Shipping Costs

Stamps.com Inc. is preparing the launch of iShip, a service thathelps companies manage the shipping of important packages and minimize shipping costs. The iShip service, which debuts June 12, is broken into three pieces:

- The iShip Desktop Shipping Station lets employees throughout a company access a browser to compare prices across multiple shipping services, such as Federal Express and United Parcel Service; print carrier labels; and track shipments via their PCs.

- The iShip Professional Shipping Station lets mailroom personnel process shipments and create reports on employee usage and shipping patterns.

- The iShip Administrator's Station lets manager define which methods of shipping are acceptable to company policy. Managers also can enter information about pre-negotiated rates with shipping carriers.

At Sun Life Insurance, a beta test site for the service, employees can sign on to the Stamps.com Web site and choose from multiple shipping options provided by Sun shipping managers. "Prior to having this service, many employees would automatically ship packages overnight without realizing how much more money it cost the company," says Christopher Seebeck, senior manager of administrative services for Sun Life. "Now they can see that a second-day shipment can save more than $70 per package in some cases. So they are choosing the cheaper rate."
