N+I: HP's Fiorina Sees Net Moving To Services

Hewlett-Packard's vision of the future includes an always-on Internet infrastructure providing services for "everything that can be digitized," according to Carly Fiorina, chairman, president, and CEO.

During her opening keynote address at Networld+Interop in Atlanta, she pointed to several technological shifts that she sees driving technology. Her predictions include a move toward more open-source software, a service-based computing paradigm, and the future success of the IA-64 (Intel Architecture-64). She pointed to the success of Linux as proof that open-source software's time has arrived. "By all measures, Linux is successful and mainstream," she said.

For service-based computing, Fiorina predicts a time when it will be common for businesses to cluster unused computing resources, such as computer systems after business hours, to perform large computing tasks, then disengage when the job is complete.

Fiorina also touched on Hewlett-Packard's proposed purchase of PricewaterhouseCoopers' consultancy unit, saying the days of CIOs wanting to talk to one consultancy for technology and another for business advice are over. Today, she says, CIOs want advice on the way to use technology to drive and accelerate business processes.
