The problem is caused by GoogleToolbarNotifier, a companion application that continues to run in memory even after its been shutoff, according to the Google Operating System Blog, which is not affiliated with the search engine.
Google was not available for immediate comment, but a person identified as Benjamin Lewis from Google told the blog of the memory problem and said the bug would be fixed.
The problem, if not fixed, would have issued warnings when someone tried to install Microsoft's toolbar onto IE. Google and Microsoft have become fierce rivals in the competition for search advertising and desktop software that links back to their respective Web properties.
