IBM, Intel Propose PCI Express Enhancements

Geneseo outlines new features that are said to enable faster connectivity in a system. Applications that could benefit include visualization, data-intensive financial applications, and content processing, according to backers.
SAN JOSE, Calif. — IBM, Intel and others Wednesday (Sept. 27) said that they have devised a proposal to enhance PCI Express technology to address the performance requirements of new usage models, such as visualization and the extensible markup language (XML).

The proposal, codenamed "Geneseo," outlines enhancements that are said to enable faster connectivity in a system. Applications that could benefit from the technology include visualization, data intensive financial applications and content processing, according to the companies.

"IBM is co-founding a new open standard for attaching accelerators and co-processors to server platforms," said Tom Bradicich, IBM Fellow and chief technology officer, in a statement. "Like PCI-X, InfiniBand and PCI Express, this new architecture defines a standards-based approach for improving general purpose server accessibility within new and emerging application areas, such as encryption, visualization, XML and complex mathematical modeling."

Geneseo is supported by several companies including Adaptec, AGEIA, Altera, Broadcom, Celoxica, Cisco Systems, ClearSpeed Technology, Dell, EMC, Emulex, HP, Integrated Device Technology, Lecroy, Linux Networx, LSI Logic, Mellanox Technologies, Myricom, NetEffect, Novell, Nvidia, PLX Technology, PMC-Sierra, QLogic, Sun Microsystems, Synopsys, Tektronix, Xambala, Xilinx, and Xtreme Data.
