The M4000, M5000, M8000, and M9000, which run the Solaris operating system, are built for large-scale databases, data warehouses, and ERP applications from Oracle, SAP, and other business software vendors. The latest Sparc64 processor provides 80% better performance and uses 44% less energy per core than the previous generation, according to the companies.
The Sparc Enterprise servers are co-designed by Sun and Fujitsu. Companies using machines with Sparc64 VI processors can upgrade to the new chips without making other hardware changes. In addition, companies can mix the two processors in the multiprocessor Enterprise machines, which are available with four to 64 CPUs.
The new Sparc64 VII is a 65-nanometer chip, versus 90 nanometers for the Sparc64 VI, which means more transistors can be fit on a single die than on the older model. More transistors translate into a higher performance-to-power ratio.
The Sparc64 VII has a clock speed of 2.4 or 2.52 GHz versus 2.15, 2.28, or 2.4 GHz for the previous model. The M4000 6U rack-mount server, the smallest of the line, has a maximum of four CPUs, 128 GB of memory, and a 292 GB internal hard drive. The M9000, which is the most powerful of the line, is a floor-standing, data center unit with a maximum of 64 CPUs, 2 TB of memory, and a 9.34 TB internal hard drive.
Pricing was not disclosed, but Sun is offering a trade-in program for companies that want to upgrade their current hardware.
