BI Partners With Search

Search technology is expected to become the primary method for finding information in business intelligence repositories. Google pushed the trend into high gear last month when it added to its search appliance a new feature for tapping into data stores for business applications.Since then, BI vendors have cranked out the press releases announcing their support for enterprise search engines. Among the first was Cognos, which said shortly after the Google announcement that it would open up Cognos 8 to the Google Search Appliance, and the IBM Websphere Information Integrator OmniFind Edition. SAS was another BI vendor that made a similar announcement regarding Google about the same time.

Since last week's newsletter, Business Objects and Information Builders have announced their support for Google. In addition, Cognos and Fast Search & Transerfer are joining the FAST Enterprise Search Platform with Cognos 8 to deliver corporate content directly to information workers.

So there's definitely a trend toward connecting enterprise search with BI, Dan Everett, analyst for Ventana Research said. Rather than continue to let customers search for information in folders, "the BI vendors are making it easier to find documents and information within their repositories."

"Eventually, you'll see ad hoc queries (just for BI applications) go away and be replaced with search engines," Everett said.

Indeed, Ventana recommends that organizations' shift their investments in BI query components and training to search technology.
