Georgia Seeks New Network

Georgia is seeking bids for a statewide VPN that will support voice, video, and data services.

Georgia is seeking bids to replace its aging frame-relay networks with a virtual private network that employs multiprotocol label switching to support voice, video, and data services for not only state agencies but county and municipal governments, schools, and libraries.

According to a request for proposal, the network would let customers of the Georgia Technology Authority--the state's IT agency--employ video conferencing, distance learning, and telemedicine services. The authority estimates it could deploy voice-over-IP phone hookups in a year.

The authority says the network is needed because new applications and services offered by state agencies require greater bandwidth and would let the state take advantage of the proliferation of useful technologies that network could support, such as wireless. A new network also would be more secure than existing ones and simpler to administer, the authority says.

Gov. Sonny Perdue has proposed that one-quarter of state workers be able to work away from their regular offices, and the new network would help achieve that goal. This would benefit workers employed outside the metropolitan Atlanta area, a high priority for Perdue, according to the authority.

Bids are due March 22.
