The company said in a statement that its Sprint Music Store will enable users to browse, preview and purchase "hundreds of thousands" of songs for $2.50. The music will come from EMI Music, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group and Universal Music Group. The service provides two copies of each song: One they can play on their phone and another they can download to their desktop computer. The company said in a statement that, once downloaded to a PC, users can burn the music to CDs.
In addition, Sprint is offering users live TV on 30 channels, the company said. It said its Sprint TV service includes both standard channels such as CNN and programming by NBC and ABC, but also on-demand videos.
"Sprint is taking convergence to the next level by giving customers the ultimate entertainment experience while on the go," Len Lauer, chief operating officer for Sprint Nextel said in a statement.
The company announced two phones from Sanyo and Samsung that can take advantage of the service. The announcements coincide with Sprint's roll-out of its EV-DO 3G network, which it claims will be available to 130 million people in the U.S. by the end of November.
The announcement is a strong indication that Sprint is catching up fast with Verizon Wireless, which has had its 3G service available widely throughout the U.S.
