"Although the iPhone hasn't had an expansionary impact in the market, the iPhone has quickly assumed a leading market share position and raised the ante for smart devices," said Barry Gilbert, VP of Strategy Analytics' BuyerTrax programs.
Though, according to Gilbert, the iPhone hasn't had an "expansionary impact", I think the iPhone effect is fully under way. Just look at the news from the last few weeks and the number of touch-screen devices that have been announced. Manufacturers and carriers are racing to get touch-enabled phones into the hands of their customers. Will they ever catch up to the iPhone? One device doesn't have to.
Believe it or not, the Motorola Razr V3 remains the top dog in the United States. Strategy Analytics didn't say which Razr V3, though. There are at least six different iterations of the V3. It's likely still the No. 1 seller at this point because it has become the "free" phone for many carriers that stock it. With much better models being offered, the original Razr's star is finally fading.
Gilbert continued, "The sales trajectory we are observing with the iPhone could make it the top-selling device in the U.S. over the next 1-2 quarters."
So he thinks the iPhone will eventually take over and become the No. 1 phone. If and when it does, Apple and AT&T will certainly have something to crow about.
