The company told Electronista that only 3% of its sales are coming from WP7, and that Android devices are out-selling WP7 devices 15 to 1. Symbian devices are also out-selling WP7 devices, though at a 3 to 1 ratio.
This same retailer called competing retailers in the U.K., including Carphone Warehouse. None of its competitors would confirm any numbers, but noted that sales of Windows Phone 7 devices were not impressive.
The only real figure floated to the media for initial WP7 sales came from an un-sourced article on TheStreet.com, which said 40,000 consumers snapped up WP7 devices on launch day in the U.S., November 8. That number has not been confirmed by Microsoft.
Taking a look from a different angle, we might be able to guess at what the sales numbers look like. Based on the number of users of the Facebook application for Windows Phone 7, WMPoweruser estimates that about 120,000 WP7 devices are being used regularly. Facebook for WP7 is the second-most popular app in the Windows Phone Marketplace, and we can assume that a significant percentage of WP7 users have installed it.
WMPoweruser bemoans the fact that, if these numbers are accurate, Microsoft's old Windows Mobile 6.x platform sold 10 times as many devices in Q310 when compared to Windows Phone 7 devices in Q410.
Microsoft has said that it hopes to sell 30 million WP7 devices by the end of 2011. Can Microsoft make up the ground it has lost to Apple, RIM, and Google?
