HP Unveils L3000 Server

Companies looking for powerful, scalable servers that can handle unprecedented processing volumes during the busy holiday season received a gift Tuesday when Hewlett-Packard unveiled the L3000 HP-UX four-way server. HP expects the L3000 to grab the attention of a lot of customers, especially service providers that need high input/output capabilities, large companies that need a server capable of running a department or branch office, and dot-com companies that can use the L3000 as an application server between the firewall and the database servers.

The L3000 comes with as many as four PA 8600 RISC processors that run at a clock speed of 550 MHz. HP says the 8600 and the efficient way the vendor organizes processors and memory on the system bus sets the L3000 apart from similar servers offered by IBM and Sun Microsystems. HP's application-specific integrated circuit memory controller chip reduces the latency that exists on any multiprocessor server.

Ron Schloss, content development manager for HP's business systems and technology operation, doesn't want anyone to get the idea that the L in front of the name means the L3000 is a low-end server. "We think this is the biggest, baddest server in the entry level four-way space," Schloss says. "We're bringing technology to the entry level that's not found in the space."

The L3000 is available now and is priced at $39,000 to $150,000, based on configuration.
